Notes from ICAC Director, Andrew Seltz

Ingham County Animal Control is a dynamic and fluid operation that provides animal care and enforcement services to the people and pets of Ingham County. You would have to call me a liar if I were to tell you that every day was the same here at ICAC. You never know what you are going to walk into on any given day and that is what creates the exciting atmosphere we come to expect every day. From rescuing a stranded dog or cat to placing a long term shelter resident into a loving forever home, we do it all!

Since ICAC “does it all”, our organization is very unique in the sphere of animal welfare. We can offer a “two-pronged” approach when it comes to our services to the community and their pets.

The first and best known aspect of our services is sheltering. Sheltering encompasses animal intake, animal adoptions, animal care, animal fostering and animal based outreach…I guess you could say we are into our animals! We strive to provide wonderful and loving homes to all of our shelter residents while also preventing pets from entering into the shelter system to begin with. Those team members involved with sheltering and outreach really exemplify what it means to care.

The second and least known aspect of our services is enforcement. Enforcement encompasses those activities which locate, investigate and request prosecution for crimes against animals as well as keeping the public safe through the recovery of dangerous and/or vicious dogs. Ingham County Animal Control Officers are in your neighborhoods everyday providing for one of our best kept secrets, our ability to enforce local and state laws relating to animal care and the prevention of animal cruelty. Our officers are the professionals we entrust to ensure that those with no voices can be heard.

The staff, volunteers and fosters that make up the Ingham County Animal Control “family” can be summed up in one word, amazing! This team shows up day in and day out to provide quality care and progressive programs for the pets in our care. We are a lean organization which means we do more with less and all of these wonderful and caring people make it happen. They all wear multiple hats throughout the day and give 110% to our pets and citizens. Whether you are an employee, a volunteer or a foster; you are a member of the ICAC team as soon as you walk through the door.

This blog will help highlight the activities within Ingham County Animal Control that prove our value to the community and its pets. We will highlight various aspects within our organization to give our followers the complete picture of what we do and why we do it. This will also be a great opportunity to highlight the numerous success stories that our wonderful team create on a daily basis.

I thank you for the opportunity to serve you, the community, and your pets as well as the opportunity for this organization to become a great resource for all of your pet concerns and questions. I look forward to what the future holds for Ingham County Animal Control and the community and pets we serve.
